45th MIÑO INTERNATIONAL REGATTA

21st PONTEVEDRA COUNTY COUNCIL PRESIDENCY CUP

The regatta began 45 years ago as a regatta open to any club on the Iberian Peninsula. Our intention is to make this regatta increasingly open so that any club that wants to visit the wonderful waters of the Miño River in Galicia, Spain, can participate.

A bit of history:

Between 1981 and 1987, the organisation of the event alternated between the Remo do Miño and Caminhense clubs, with one year taking place upstream, from Goián to Tui, and the following year downstream, from Carregal to Caminha.

From 1988 onwards, the organisation of the regatta passed entirely to the Remo do Miño club, which continues to hold it, with some editions also serving as the ‘Spanish Long Distance Championship by Autonomous Community’.

The regatta began with only the 8+ (eight with coxswain) and 4x (four scull) absolute categories, but since 2004, the 8+ (eight with coxswain) veteran category has been included and the absolute categories have been opened up to free categories. Mixed crews are also allowed, with mixed meaning members of the same gender but from different clubs.

The first editions covered the distance between the Goian pier and the Cabo Fradera detachment in Tui (approximately 16 km), although the current distance is approximately 6 km.

Throughout the history of the regatta, many clubs from outside the Iberian Peninsula have come to participate in this great regatta.
In 1990, we were joined by teams from the prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

In 2017, we had the first participation of a women's 8+ boat from the First and Third Trinity College Boat Club at the University of Cambridge.
In recent editions, we have had the participation of between 15 and 20 clubs from Spain and Portugal, with a total of approximately 375 athletes.
